How many pages make up your Safety Management System?

Some years ago I was working in a FTSE 100 company as a project manager to a HSE team. Looking to renew the Safety Management System we started by doing a page count of everything we could find. At Group level we found 6000 pages which led us to wonder how many pages we would find in each division or business unit i.e. at business management or local site-level. At a count of 25,000 pages the point was well made that it was highly probable that the safety management system probably was not working and most of the documented safe systems of work were probably out of date and not being followed.

Your system can be what you want it to be and derived using what is available to you and within your budget. You could choose a bespoke off the shelf system and tailor it to your needs. Your overall system could be a system of systems, tapping into other systems already implemented in your oranisation. You might even be able to use talented individuals to develop an in-house solution.
